Martin Luther King Font Update
#36 - 2 new N and three new g

You downloaded the Martin Luther King handwriting font, and I wanted to let you know that an updated version is ready for you to download from your account:

|
The new version will appear in your font menu as “Martin Luther King 2023 May.” I recommend uninstalling older versions to keep your font menu organized. The next update will arrive in June 2023.

I am following up on last month's improvements in programming the font to change as you type. This update adds five new letters that benefit from the programming introduced with the previous update.
|
|
|
In prior updates, I added more and more special letters that would reflect the characteristics of Dr. King's handwriting. For example, unique final forms or initial forms of a letter that appear at the beginning or end of a word, or added more versions of a letter so that no similar letterforms are placed next to each other. In this update, I did a mix of all of that.
|
|
First, I turned my attention toward the capital N. The Font already had a pretty capital N with a nice swash on the left.
|
|
|
|
But looking at the resulting text, the swash can stick out a bit as it grabs too much attention and then seems rather repetitive than unique. So I chose two versions to appear "more regular," rather than having an overly decorated style, and to add more variety. I found them here in the manuscript "An Autobiography of Religious Development"on page 4.

|
Now the font stores three different versions of the letter N:
|
|
|
|
As you type, the font actively exchanges between alternative letters.
|
|
|
|
The following letter I took on was the lowercase g at the end of a word. The version in the font already looked great. Still, since, especially in the English language, many words end with g, think of all the words ending with "-ing," I thought variety could have a tremendous effect on the overall appearance of the font. I found some excellent samples on page 9 of "An Autobiography of Religious Development."

Before this update, all versions of the lowercase g at the end of the word would look like this:

I thought that was it for this update, but then I spotted this very beautiful g at the bottom of page 9:

I couldn’t resist and now it is in the font, stored under g.ss01

PS.: This is the second release that comes only in OpenType PostScript Format (.otf). I used to include both TrueType and OpenType with each update because TrueType tended to work better with Microsoft Word. I recently rechecked this, and they both work fine, so I am sticking with OpenType. Hopefully, this makes the process for everybody more straightforward, and you don’t have to think about which font format is better. Please let me know if you have any problems with the .otf font file so I can address this in the next update.

You may notice that the font's code is executed slightly differently than on a desktop computer.
|
|
|
|
If you like experimenting with this, you could start by opening the sample Word documents on your phone. However, I could use them in Word, but when I exported a PDF, the fonts were broken. But this could also be my device. Did you experience similar issues?
